Job Summary

The vice president of finance (VP) has primary responsibility for all aspects of PeopleForBikes’ financial management, oversight and reporting. This position will provide leadership and coordination in the accounting, forecasting and budgeting efforts for the PeopleForBikes Coalition, a 501(c)(6) trade association plus an affiliated political action committee, and the PeopleForBikes Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. 

Reporting directly to the CEO and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, this position provides leadership for all aspects of the organization's financial functions for the two legally and operationally distinct organizations. The VP will collaborate closely with the CEO and Boards of Directors to ensure that all financial operations of PeopleForBikes follow nonprofit best practices and are fully compliant.

In addition, the position will provide leadership with hands-on management to ensure the organizations maximize financial results and performance, effectively budget and forecast cash flows and are compliant with generally accepted accounting principles and all funder and contract requirements. The VP will also focus on maintaining sound financial management and controls, efficient and cost-effective financial operations, policies, procedures and effective risk management. This position directly oversees a staff accountant and other indirectly related positions.

 

Responsibilities

Financial

  • Design and lead the process for creating financial forecasts and tracking, cash flow projections and analyses, develop achievable annual budgets and deploy financial resources across both organizations.

  • Ensure that the PeopleForBikes Coalition and Foundation are financially solvent.

  • Spearhead the development and implementation plans of financial systems and processes to ensure that PeopleForBikes’ financial operations, tools and staffing support effective financial management.

  • Develop, maintain and monitor all accounting systems and procedures for the recording of all revenue transactions. Recommending and implementing improvements to systems.

  • Maintain financial systems and internal controls that are sufficient to safeguard financial assets and protect the reputation of the organization.

  • Reconcile general ledger asset, liability and revenue and expense accounts monthly.

  • Provide monthly and quarterly financial statements and budget reports for program management. Assist staff in budget education and adherence.  

  • Ensure compliance with local, state and federal authorities.

  • Ensure annual external audits are completed in a timely manner and without qualification.

  • Coordinate with external accounting firm in the preparation of the organizations’ annual Form 990 filings.


Operations

  • Lead organizational financial risk management efforts and work with external advisors to mitigate risk.

  • Monitor all insurance coverages.

  • Oversee and ensure the accurate and timely completion of all compliance related filings, including the timely submittal of lobbying reports, and filings with the federal election committee (as required for our political action committee).

  • Review and recommend for approval all contracts, leases, vendor agreements and other contractual matters.


Human Resources

  • Responsible for all payroll administration, payroll tax and reporting compliance, including filings required for several out-of-state employees.

  • Manage employee benefits plans, including the annual open enrollments for health insurance, the administration of the PeopleForBikes’ 401(k) retirement and long-term disability plans and the annual filing of Form 5500.



Qualifications

  • A minimum of eight years of senior leadership experience in financial management, including forecasting, fiscal management, budgeting, grants management and analysis.

  • Proven professional experience in finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including GAAP in organizations with a budget of at least $5 million.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing finance staff, including strong ability to delegate, train, coach and motivate.

  • A degree in accounting or similar business discipline is required.

  • CPA preferred.

  • Nonprofit work experience is strongly preferred.

  • Strong grants tracking and reporting experience preferred.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.

  • Is honest, has sound judgement and is discrete.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in various modular based accounting softwares (Quickbooks Enterprise Edition is a plus).

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills — in particular the ability to easily convey complex financial concepts and results to employees at all levels.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to achieve deadlines.

  • Capable of handling confidential and financial information.

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects with attention to detail and accuracy while adhering to deadlines in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.

  • Collaborative management and working style with a diverse workforce.

 Compensation and Benefits

This “at-will” position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience with a range of  $125,000 - $165,000.  PeopleForBikes offers an excellent and comprehensive benefits package. This includes paid health insurance for employees, a generous paid-time-off (PTO) policy including 22 days plus federal holidays, paid parental leave, a flexible work schedule including work from home options and optional participation in a deferred compensation retirement plan with immediate vesting of the competitive employer match. In addition, we provide long-term disability insurance, a cell phone plan and a laptop computer along with other benefits.
