Job Description & Requirements


The Trails & Volunteer Coordinator will be an integral member of MALT’s small and dedicated team of staff, board, and volunteers. They will serve as MALT’s boots on the ground while passionately caring for, and connecting our community with MALT’s lands and trails. They will report to the Executive Director and supervise seasonal staff, interns, and AmeriCorps members. The Trails & Volunteer Coordinator will: 

 

Trail Maintenance (40%) 

 

  • Align MALT’s stewardship of trails and publicly accessible lands with the goals, vision, and strategies of MALT’s current Strategic Plan; 

  • Hire and supervise all interns, AmeriCorps members, and seasonal staff as it pertains to trail maintenance; 

  • Serve as staff liaison for MALT’s Board of Director’s Trails Committee; 

  • Schedule, coordinate, execute, and oversee all trail maintenance activities; 

  • Perform regular trail maintenance to ensure trails are maintained at a high standard. This includes chainsaw work, wheelbarrow pushing, trimming with clippers, weed whacking, and digging; 

  • Ensure proper maintenance of all trail tools and equipment, coordinate movement of tools and equipment; 

  • Oversee budget and expense tracking for the trail program; 

  • Administer sub-contracts, working with vendors to manage mowing plowing, mowing, and other trail maintaining activities. 

 

Volunteer Coordination (30%) 

 

  • Lead MALT’s volunteer trail program in a time of growth with appreciation, timeliness, attention to detail, and a side-by-side work culture; 

  • Recruit, train, mobilize, and build ongoing relationships with volunteers; 

  • Administer MALT’s volunteer-based trail program with schedules, accurate record-keeping, and planning of volunteer trail activities. 

 

Conserved Lands Monitoring (15%) 

 

  • Under the direction of the Lands & Grants Manager and during the winter months, coordinate a community-science land monitoring program for our 3,700+ acres of conserved lands and assist with land improvement projects as needed. 

 

Education (10%) 

 

  • In collaboration with the Education Manager, explore and develop service-learning opportunities for a variety of users and partner groups on MALT’s lands and trails. If qualified and interested, there may be opportunities to work with youth in MALT’s place-based education programs; 

  • Ensure all materials that communicate about MALT trails are accurate, up to date, and widely available. This includes online materials, social media engagement, and physical trail maps stocked at kiosks. 

 

Administration (5%) 

 

  • Act as part of the office team by answering general phone/email inquiries, supporting office volunteers, maintaining a clean and efficient office space, and assisting in preparing mailings and appeals; 

  • Collect and create content for e-news, website, and social media.
