About This Position 
Teen Adventure Trip (Trek) Leaders facilitate groups of 8-10 teenagers on several, one and two week-long outdoor adventure trips throughout the Northeast, both in the front- and backcountry. On each trip, two Trek Leaders work closely together to supervise and create a positive group environment where participants can learn, grow and develop leadership skills in an active outdoor setting. Trek Leaders will lead multiple trips, spending the off time participating in staff training, trip planning, supporting trips, and working in program areas for overnight and family camps. Schedules will typically run two or three weeks on Treks followed by one week in camp. Trek Leaders also offer support in other Wildwood teen programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead safe, engaging outdoor activities 
  • Facilitate hiking, backpacking, biking, camping and other nature-based activities 
  • Supervise and support group, even when under the teaching guidance of an outside instructor 
  • Safely drive Trekkers in vehicles 
  • Make topics engaging, fun, and educational for participants 
  • Adhere to minimum-impact camping ethics (Leave No Trace) 
• Communicate clearly and regularly with Wildwood 
  • Maintain journals and logs recording pertinent information 
• Facilitate all aspects of daily life and Trekkers’ development 
  • Plan nutritious menus 
  • Ensure Trekkers are practicing good hygiene 
  • Lead activities and experiences that contribute to the development of leadership skills and environmental literacy 

Qualifications

Required qualifications as per New Hampshire Department of Health & Human Services regulations, American Camp Association standards and Mass Audubon Policy: 

• Must be 21+
• Must have a valid driver’s license and have 2+ years driving experience
• Must have a love of nature and be able to articulate it to participants, as well as a working level of environmental literacy
• Have strong back-country camping and hiking skills
• Experience in one or more: backpacking, biking, or paddling
• Must hold or be able to obtain Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification
• Experience in Leave No Trace and back-country cooking
• Participate in mandated, paid camp training and utilize learning including: natural history, communication, group management, health and safety, and teaching techniques
• Be willing to work in all weather conditions including: heat, sun, humidity and rain
• Physically access sanctuary terrain easily by foot
• Ability to effectively interact with others, especially children, in camp’s youth-centered environment
• Ability to adapt to changes in schedule and work assignment
• ­Possess endurance to meet emergency needs

Desired Qualifications 

• Additional certifications such as lifeguard, water safety, or paddling instructor 
• Experience rock climbing 
• Experience leading service projects

Compensation, Benefits and Perks  
This position’s base salary begins at $450/week; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. Compensation includes housing and meals for the duration of employment. This is not a benefits eligible position.

All Mass Audubon Camp Staff undergo mandatory training prior to interacting with campers.  Training includes: Natural History, Lesson Planning, Behavior Management, Games, and so much more.
