Position Summary

Instructors at UBI deliver high-quality, hands-on instruction in bicycle repair, maintenance, advanced mechanics and related topics. You will guide students of varying experience levels—from beginners to aspiring professionals—through practical workshops, lectures, practical application and hands on activities. The role requires deep technical knowledge and expertise, strong communication skills, team work and a passion for teaching and cycling.

 

Key Responsibilities

·        Prepare and deliver engaging classroom and hands-on instruction using UBI’s extensively developed curriculum and study guides, professional-grade tools, custom workbenches and professional shop and classroom setting.

·        Demonstrate bicycle repair, assembly, adjustment, and diagnostic techniques across various bicycle systems (e.g., drivetrain, brakes, suspension, wheels).

·        Maintain a safe, organized, and positive learning environment that encourages questions and experimentation.

·        Assess student progress, provide individualized feedback, and support certification requirements where applicable.

·        Stay current with evolving bicycle technology, components, and industry standards.

·        Collaborate with faculty and staff on curriculum improvements and class preparation.

·        Participate in school operations as needed (e.g., tool maintenance, student advising, facilities and equipment care).

·        Represent UBI professionally at events and with industry partners.

 

Qualifications

Experience:   Required minimum equivalent of three full-time years and preferably multiple years of professional experience in the bicycle industry, such as working as a mechanic, service manager, frame builder, or in related roles (e.g., suspension repair, manufacturing, or shop ownership). Prior teaching or training experience is highly preferred.

Technical Knowledge:  Proficiency in bicycle mechanics (basic to advanced), with expertise in specific areas of professional repair.

Education:  Relevant certifications (e.g., UBI Certified Bicycle Technician or equivalent) or demonstrated equivalent knowledge and experience. A passion for continuous learning is essential.

Teaching Ability:  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to explain complex concepts clearly, patiently, and enthusiastically to diverse learners.

Other Requirements:

·         Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

·         Physical ability to demonstrate repairs and handle bicycles/tools.

·         Adherence to instruction using UBI curriculum, methodology and best practices.

·         Commitment to safety and following all industry safety practices.

·         Authorization to work in the United States.

·         Enthusiasm for cycling and the bike industry.

Background Checks

Candidates are subject to state and national criminal background checks including fingerprinting.  Candidates convicted of any crimes listed in ORS 342.143 or equivalent in another jurisdiction outside of Oregon cannot be employed by United Bicycle Institute.
