Piragis is perhaps the largest dealer of kevlar canoes in the world selling Wenonah and Bell canoes. Piragis NWC is a multi channel retailer marketing through its catalog, The Boundary Waters Catalog and its web site www.piragis.com. The company employs 19 full time year round staff and up to 20 summer only staff. Full time employees are vested in a generous 401K plan and have full health benefits through a health savings plan. The Ely area is home to some 7000 residents and hundreds of seasonal homes on area lakes. The summer atmosphere is festive and the winters are cold and quiet. Nordic skiing and snow shoeing and dog sledding bring many tourists to Ely from November to March. Cost of living is quite low for most especially those burning wood to heat. Ely is 100 miles north of Duluth and 60 miles from Lake Superior. The Canadian border is 6 miles from Ely but only accesible by canoe or kayak.
