Position Title: Site Manager - Yosemite

Reports to: Operations Director and/or Executive Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt mid-October to mid-May; Exempt mid-May to mid-Oct

Compensation: Starting at $25/hour (non-exempt) and $1300/week (exempt)

Schedule: 11-months; January - November.

Since 1997, we have facilitated multi-day wilderness adventures for over 4,400 youth; of which nearly 25% have benefited from our scholarship program. Additionally, through our Guide Service, we have benefited another 10,000 adults/families through Day Hikes and Backpacking trips since 2010. Lasting Adventures has now evolved to being the #1 Outdoor Activity within Yosemite National Park (as rated by TripAdvisor), one of the “Best Backpacking Summer Camps in the West” (Outside Magazine) and as a company that "Enriches Your Encounters with Yosemite" by Frommer’s. Lasting Adventures is also permitted and operates smaller programs in Joshua Tree, Olympic, Lassen Volcanic, and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks.


POSITION FOCUS

The Site Manager in Yosemite will be responsible for our Summer Camp & Guide Service Programs while supervising a large seasonal staff of approximately 20-30 employees. With the support of our Operations Director and Executive Director, the Site Manager's responsibilities will include operations and logistics, human resources, risk management, scheduling, transportation, reporting, and annual reviews of policies and procedures, and collaborating on client emails/calls with our Admin Team. The Site Manager implements best practices in compliance with state, local and federal laws, policies, and procedures.


POSITION EXPECTATIONS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(This list may not include all of the duties assigned)

  • Manages weekly and day-to-day operations and logistics for our Yosemite location.

  • Supervises all Yosemite staff including Outdoor Educators, Guides, Program Managers, Assistants, and/or Interns.

  • Assists in scheduling and staff assignments.

  • Plays a major role in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, supervising, supporting, disciplining, and evaluating staff.

  • Manages the Prep/Gear Room including inventories, purchasing, shopping trips, and cleaning/organizing.

  • Supports email and phone communications between campers, parents, clients, and staff to address concerns while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.

  • Coordinates the weekly BBQ, announcements, Inspirational Moment(s), and/or special activities. Coordinate other staff events including community service, themed events, staff recognition, and other staff outings.

  • Oversees all pre- and post-trip meetings with on-site staff.

  • Shares on-site support role at the start and ending of most youth and specialty trips. 

  • Shares driving and transportation responsibilities to support all trips/programs.

  • Program and curriculum development including revisions to the Lasting Adventures Program Manual and Staff Field/Resource Book.

  • Support the Operations Director with updates to our Risk Management Plan, Admin Handbook, and Employee Handbook.

  • Helps manage Group, Outdoor Education, and other Specialty Programs. 

  • Serves critical roles in crisis response and evacuation procedures.

  • Guides day hikes, summer camps, and backpacking trips as needed/required.

  • Participates in daily, weekly, monthly and annual team, department and company meetings, taking a leadership role as required.

  • Facility management and basic buildings and grounds maintenance/repairs at our guide house property, and/or managing a repair or maintenance service.

  • Works with the company bookkeeper to reconcile company books.

  • Contributes to our marketing efforts including social media content, newsletters, and incentives.

  • Maintains current certifications and knowledge relevant to the position (see Qualifications).

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Education, Youth Development, Counseling or equivalent work experience.

  • At least three years of experience in a supervisory/leadership role in a similar setting.

  • Experience selecting, training, supervising and evaluating camp and guide staff.

  • Experience as a professional guide and/or outdoor educator preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, to work effectively in a team setting with diverse staff. 

  • Experience in designing and implementing innovative outdoor programs for diverse populations.

  • Experience in the development and administration of work plans, budgets, and program evaluation.

  • Ability to solve problems quickly and discreetly, and provide a debrief to staff and supervisors when necessary.

  • Extensive knowledge of Yosemite National Park.

  • Ability to work 6-day weeks with flexible hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays during our peak season of May through October, including on-call duties. 

  • Valid Driver’s License, proof of insurance, and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required.

  • Current certifications and knowledge relevant to the position, including but not limited to: Wilderness First Responder (or higher); CA Food Handler’s Certificate; CA Commercial Class C License (CDL, preference given); and others as required by a supervisor.

  • Ability to pass a CA DOJ and FBI fingerprinted background check via LiveScan.

  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office and Google Office Suites, and other software.

    • Examples: WordPress; QuickBooks Online; Photoshop and/or Lightroom; Google Analytics; LandBot.io; Zapier; HCMs and HRMs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.

  • Ability to perform light work exerting up to 50 lb. of force occasionally, and/or a similar amount of force constantly to move objects.

  • Ability to work outdoors for multiple days in heat and cold weather conditions, walk up hills, lead hikes, stand to teach, and hike up to 15 strenuous miles daily with a backpack weighing 20-70 lb. 

  • Strong visual acuity required, performing such activities as preparing and analyzing data and figures, inspecting and repairing gear and equipment, using a computer terminal and reading text, and performing maintenance on company property. 

KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Problem solving, conflict resolution, interpersonal skills, oral communication, written communication, adaptability, and dependability.

  • Experience with computers and printers, telephone, fax machine, copier, audiovisual equipment, security systems (security cameras and alarms), and other miscellaneous office equipment.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Activities occur both indoors and outdoors and the employee is subject to environmental conditions of both locations; however, the employee is not regularly/substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

CALENDAR

  • This is an 11-month position January-November. It is paid at the Exempt Rate between mid-May mid-October and non-exempt (hourly) at all other times. 

  • Expect 40 hour weeks between October and May, with occasional overtime as needed/approved. (In the field, overnight guiding also has a small bonus.) Hours will increase to exempt with on-call duties between mid-May and mid-October.

  • It is expected that the Site Manager will either live onsite or report daily for work to our Guide House/Office property located in Groveland, California for the prime season of May through October.
