North Carolina Outward Bound School’s Fellowship for BIPOC Staff is a 6-month working fellowship position for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color looking to start or further a career in the Outdoor Education industry. The organizational goal of the Fellowship is to increase diversity in the outdoor professional community at large by hiring staff with historically excluded identities and providing career-building employment coupled with an opportunity for relationship building with other BIPOC outdoor professionals.
This Fellowship is done on a given "track" depending on each candidates qualifications and career goals. The potential tracks are:
- Field Instructor Track
- Logistics Department Track
- Support Track
*Please familiarize yourself with the open Field and Administrative staff positions to decide which track is best for you. The Fellowship for BIPOC Staff serves as an enhancement to any of these positions while employed.*
Fellowship Orientation Components:
Cohort introduction and culture building
Wilderness First Responder Medical Training (80 hours)
Wilderness Backpacking Expedition, Rock Climbing, Whitewater Paddling, and High Ropes Course
Professional Development in Experiential Education practices
Orientation to the administrative functions within the NCOBS organization
Fellowship Compensation and Benefits:
Per diem pay of $100/day for all Fellowship work days
Per diem pay based on position held at NCOBS (see other open job postings www.ncobs.org/careers)
$500 clothing and gear stipend and access to pro-deals
Transportation compensation up to $300 for initial travel to Western NC
Housing and food for the duration of employment
Access to one-on-one professional mentorship from experienced outdoor professionals
Free use of program gear
Fellowship Criteria:
Desire to work directly with students/participants in a wilderness setting
Comfort participating in high-impact activities such as hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, whitewater paddling, etc.
Experience working with youth is a plus
Group facilitation skills
Full vaccination against Covid-19
Experience working in a wilderness setting is desired, but not required
Willingness to commit to at least 6 months of employment
Desire to chart the future NCOBS as a more diverse, equitable, just, and inclusive space
